Appearance;Rayne has an awkward build, Tall and well-muscled, also very toned. Neither is his body built completely for strength nor one meant especially for speed and agility. Although his body may seem not to fit a Waterbender, Rayne after years of training has become both extremely powerful as well as being equipped with deadly speed and precision. Also every person who has challenged him has underestimated him due to his build, but each of them paid they price for their grave mistake. He wears his long hair down a little past his shoulders usually tied back in a pony-tail, he always has a few loose strands falling down about his face. When alone his hair is typically let loose to fall freely about his neck and shoulder without being restrained. With eyes that are as blue as the icy waters of his home land, he views the world portraying all the false emotions that make one seem ‘human’ and using his beautiful orbs to lie to the world. Rayne’s clothing usually consists of thin black silky-like pants that hang loosely around his hips and legs allowing for maximum mobility with no resisting force to hinder his attacks, these pants are held up by an ice blue sash strewn about his waist. He rarely wears a shirt, and on those rare occasions he wears a dark blue tunic that waves loosely on his torso with only a few buttons actually fastened.

Overall Personality;Rayne has learned how to appear what others like to perceive as ‘normal’; although it hadn’t always been that way. During his youth Rayne always had a short fuse. And when he became angry it was very difficult to calm him down, that could happen one of two ways: either the one who pissed him off was taken care of. Or two: one of his few friends could talk him out of his rage. It was only after meeting another Waterbender by the name of Varoen shortly after he had sought the protection of the Northern Water Tribe for himself… but mostly for you little sister. Yumi Kaoru. Was Rayne able to mask the emotions of these so-called normal people. Presently Rayne has mastered this ‘mask’ so to speak and appears to be laid back and easy going for the most part. Along with his long military career and Var’s teaching him to portray emotion Rayne has learned to contain his anger and not lash out at every single idiot who seems to want to really piss him off.
History Info
Home Country; The Southern Water Tribe.
siblings; 1 younger sister, Yumi Kaoru.
history; Ame Kaoru came into the world during a period of militaristic growth in the powerbase of the Southern Water Tribe which would become the focus of his life for a good many years. Since he was young the name of Ame had never truly stuck to him and as an alternative chose to go by the name his parents called him, that of Rayne. They called him this for the hopes of glory to rain down upon him in his later years. His father, who was absent from their lives for a great number of his years for his service in the military, was Raynes idol and seemed to be held in an almost godlike status in the young boys mind.
At the age of twelve Rayne was taken into one of the Southern dictatorships many reforms which called for every able bodied child to be taken and trained in the art of combat and military discipline so that they might someday hold the Southern Water Army standard upon the battlefield. Rayne trained immensely, finding great joy in the discipline and focus the military training gave him, he saw an opportunity to help support his family through the exceptional pay given by the army. He signed again at the age of fourteen as soon as he was released to his civilian life. At this time he discovered he now had a sister whom would need extra attention and funds which the family did not have. Out of love and a sense of duty to them, he took on this great responsibility, this time for life; a choice made not by him, but by another of the self serving Southern Water Tribe reforms.
To have soldiers sign for life meant that they would have a steady supply of loyal men and women who would live and die for their nation. To escape for any reason and break your promise of fellowship and protection for your people was seen as the ultimate treachery and punishable only by death. This did not bother Rayne, for though he was only allowed to see his family on military leave (which was a rare occurrence) he was happy to know that they were taken care of. Little did he know that should second thoughts about their life choice come to mind, the government had in place precautions to keep the soldier in line. Threats would be made, promises the truer word, as to what would befall their loved ones should they try to escape their fate.
Raynes only regret in his decision was that he could see his father so much less, if at all in these days as both of them were working for the same people, who cared little for their desires. His father, Rio, was stationed somewhere in the Allied Earth States with another smaller garrison doing work that he could not share with anyone but his superiors, though Rayne could guess it was something of the military diplomacy sort to assure a future ally. In the mean time, he trained for the next five years alongside people who had made similar choices; a decision that seemed to be gaining more and more second thoughts every day.
Five years later, at the age of nineteen Rayne had finally had enough of his military service. Taking care of his family was rewarding, but his life was no longer his own, he could not breath without checking first and he desired freedom. He gathered the only items he owned, his twin Kamas which were his prized weapons and stole into the night from his bunk. Soldiers similar to him tried to stand in his way, following orders of their own, and he slew them where they stood. His goal was to get to his family and then to flee with them from this place. Rayne could no longer be a part of what the South represented, and he wished to have a life of his own, to make his own choices.
Rayne traveled light and fast across the snow covered plains, avoiding any places populated by other soldiers or citizens alike. For three days he made his way and was kept on his feet only by adrenaline. When at last he found his family he was starving and ate as he told them of what he had done and that they must flee immediately or else face a terrible fate. At first his mother was furious for what he had done, threatening to renounce him as son and berating him for his lack of responsible actions to his sister and herself. He pleaded with the woman telling her of his position and the reasons for which he had acted and after an hour spent looking over his shoulder in desperation he was able to persuade her to take flight with him with his sister in tow.
With only thoughts of protecting her children Ayama took Rayne and Yumi to the dock of the village they lived in and stole a large vessel that was filled with enough supplies to see them through almost three weeks on the high seas. The nineteen year old ex-soldier made his way to the lower decks where he found a bunk and took sleep with a grain of salt for his actions. He awoke many hours later, stiff and hungry once again, finding their journey had taken them into warmer climes. Changing to fit the now sun felt heat he and his family made their way north, passed the islands claimed by their former lands, passed the Southern Air Temple and far into the rebellious Allied Earth States where they docked and sold the ship and what remained onboard for Ostrich-horses and the necessary supplies to complete the next leg of their journey. At nights Ayama and Rayne often discussed where they would go long after Yumi had taken to sleep. All they told her was that they were going on a long trip so as not to disturb the young girl. They eventually decided on the destination of the Northern Water Tribe, where they would not be disturbed by the fanatical military and would not be in danger of getting caught up in the civil war that was engulfing the Earth Kingdom.
Keeping the child in the dark was a short lived endeavor as fate changed its allegiance as it often does to those who cannot afford to feel its betrayal. Traveling in secret they thought they had been, but they were followed since their departure from the South by a small group of hunters to kil and if they felt like it, detain the traitors. They ambushed the family in the narrow choke point of the Serpents Pass and within seconds all seemed as though it were lost on this short venture. Ayama however, would not let her children become a story to deter other would be finders of freedom and unleashed a skill she had not used in a great many moons. Three soldiers blocked the forward path, preventing the family from moving back while four approached from the rear, preventing escape.
The womans maternal instincts took over and she unleashed large wave from the water at the sheer cliffs base, a feat not possible for anyone except a master. The wave washed up and over the three who walked toward her beloved children and swept the bastards into the sea. “Run! I will follow, I promise.”She had yelled to them. The panic that had initially taken her at the sight of their way blocked subsided and she could not again call up the power that she had used to clear it. Instead she pulled a simple dagger from her waist and waited as the four approached with an evil gleam in their sadistic eyes.
Rayne wished to stay, wanted to stand with his mother and defend their family together, but he knew he must go for his sister and keep her safe. Nothing must happen to the young girl, for she was the hope they needed in such a dark time.”TAKE ME BACK TO MOMMY!!! PLEASE BROTHER WE CANNOT LEAVE HER ALONE!! PLEASE!!"The girl pleaded and cried to go after their mother, to wait for her, to do anything but leave the woman behind, but Rayne did not and could not stop. Not as long as his mother sacrificed herself for them so that they might have a better life.
The two at last made it to Ba-Sing-Se and across the city to the docks where they booked passage for the Northern Water Tribe. In the mean time he told her fantastic tales while promising their mother would join them soon, a promise he hoped would come true. But as they boarded the ship and made their way across the sea to the frozen north the truth became apparent to him; He and his sister were alone in the world, as his father would likely never know they were alive. Rayne could not even be sure that the man would care to call the people his country branded traitors as family, or if the country could embrace such a man as a protector of their people. He checked over his shoulder almost the entire ride to the Northern capital, afraid to see someone with a knife at his back.
But as they set foot in the Northern Water Tribe his fears subsided and his sister seemed lost in the joys of what this new place had to offer. Freedom seemed to hang in the air as a promise of a fresh start was in the air. But there was little that Rayne could offer in the way of his talents and fell back on what he knew best. The man joined the military, this time with an organization he could trust to let him see and care for his sister daily. Yumi became his reason for living and he was fiercely protective of the young girl even as she grew older, old enough perhaps to take care of herself.
Along with the soldiers who trained in the name of their nation there were everyday citizens who took up the Northern Water Tribes standard and trained alongside those who made it their living. All wished only for a peaceful existence but were willing to give their lives for it to continue. There in this service Rayne met a person who would become his best friend in time, though neither of them would ever admit to making such a lowly human connection. Varoen, a simple fisherman and citizen soldier of the North often sparred with the man and tried his short temper by doing what few other would dare to do; He would beat him and mock him in the sparring ring, intentionally trying his temper and ultimately using the mans anger against him in combat. The only warning received before his downfall was a smug smirk that within a week pissed him off immediately. Varoen eventually offered an alternative to the temper and utter lack of emotion that Rayne seemed to show, the idea of a façade.
Rayne was trained in the way of emotional acting, the proper placement of a mask for the sake of society and the purpose of appearing normal among those whom he lived; Also for the sake of his sister, to make her life more bearable as she got older and to provide the illusion of a sane home life. Though they were virtually social outcasts they found a common ground with the other and often spent their time sparring as an excuse to do something with a friend. But this time was short lived as Varoen was taken from the Northern Tribe by a strange woman in red, leaving Rayne with only what he had learned of the mask and the sword.
He continued training and working to keep the lives of his sister and himself calm ones as he applied the mask and blended into the Tribe. Rayne became nothing more than another face in the crowd though he had an exceptional talent for battle, but it was not good enough. He often thought of the power he had seen of his mother and the way she had defended them in the Serpents pass and wished to have such ability at his fingertips. He took a position under Master Qui, a senior Waterbending teacher and a man of advanced age who was viewed with great respect. Despite the mans advanced age his teachings were sure and he produced the finest benders of any instructor in the Tribe. Rayne was not long to receive the mans tutelage however before Varoen once again reappeared, this time seeking soldiers. He at first did not recognize his old friend for both the time that had separated them and the changes that had come over their physical appearances.
When at last the two recognized each other Var asked for Rayne to join him on a conquest against the Fire Nation and to help him avenge his mothers death. Though he knew what the pain of such a loss felt like, Rayne could not and would not leave Master Qui’s side until he had learned all he could from the man and he could not in good conscience leave the Water Tribe knowing that it would be even less defended than normal. He ultimately had to refuse the offer of his friend who left not a week later with nearly three hundred of their finest soldiers.
Three years later at the age of twenty-four Rayne Kaoru stood on the deck of a military vessel as a member of the blockade preventing the spread of the demons into the waters of the world. He was onboard one of thirty ships designated for such a mission of keeping the scourge of the Spirit Realm far from those he loved and his sister who was now ten years old and in the care of one of her closest friends. The mission was easy enough it seemed and with help from the Burning Legion and Earth Kingdom navy the border that they created seemed easy enough to hold; that is if weren’t for their foes. The day Rayne gained command of his post was the day that all seemed lost for them. The North’s end of the blockade was nearly overrun by a force of great serpents that threatened to end all that they stood for and the Water Nation Soldiers stared into the maw of the beast with undeterred courage. The Admiral who led them took the front of the attack against the largest of the creatures. The mans courage was short lived, though he perhaps had the largest pair of anyone Rayne had ever met. Running off of the deck with only a sword to attack the man charged onto the beasts back grabbing hold of the spiked appendages running its spine and climbed until he reached the head and stabbed his sword into the eye of the its holder. The creature thrashed and knocked the Admiral forward into its open jaws where all seemed lost. But he would not let it be the end of him.
Rayne stopped his actions to watch in amazement as the Admiral held onto the beasts large fang with one hand he hacked at its mouth with the sword he held in the other. He eventually looked to Rayne one last time and gave the soldier a determined nod before he let go. Breath got in his throat he could not understand why the man had simply given up, only to have his question answered in mere seconds. Blood poured from an open wound on the creatures neck as a sword blade sprouted from the inside of its gullet where the Admiral had caught himself in his descent. The sword was pulled back and stabbed through the other side of the great beasts neck as it screeched in pain and anger. He wrenched the sword left attempting to sever the head of the creature all together, while blood poured out the beast. At last an idea seemed to form in the things mind and it dove, taking to the sea, leaving only a trail of blood in its wake. Several tense seconds passed and the creatures all around the ships shrank in number until only five remained, fleeing in the same way the large beast had, returning to whatever abyssal hole they had crawled from it seemed.
Rayne looked on waiting to see some sign of the Admiral, but gave up hope after several minutes. It was then that he again saw blood in the water, and the great beast rising to the waters surface once again, though it did not move. The head of it lolled upward in a lifeless stare, the Admirals sword blade poking up between its eyes in the killing blow. But the brave man was nowhere to be seen. The men both cheered and panicked, fearful for their lack of leadership, but Rayne would not let this mans bravery go wasted. He rallied the men of the North, regaling them with the Admirals heroism and in the end issued orders to them, restoring their broken confidence. The final words he spoke to them before they returned to their duties stirred them to action and secured their resolve for the remainder of their grisly task “So long as we draw breath Admiral Vanguard will serve as our measure of devotion and love for our families and our lands. His heroism shall be that which we will aspire to and what will drive us in the coming days; this mans memory will serve as a testament to us all for what it means to dedicate ones life to the protect those which he will never know. Let his memory drive us to preserve a long and prosperous history that will one day lose our names to its great pages!”
Great effort was made in the coming months in repelling the hell spawn of the Spirit Rift and a push was made against them as the coordinated efforts of the fleets drove the creatures further inland. Messengers were sent to the mainland of great success’s made on their front and an invitation was given to the men of the North for their heroism to join a glorious assault on the demons and the retaking of land that had been stolen from the realms of man. Rayne accepted the offer, taking a ship of the bravest and most battle ready of the men who accompanied him to the assault.
